Hello!
I thought I would drop by, I met Some, Wormz and Dynikz at i37 and
they introduced me to 2k4. awesome game!
I think they might have gone a bit easy on me though.

Anyway, a bit about me. I am 19 from Wiltshire UK recently finished A levels and went travelling in Canada. I became a snowboard instructor whilst i was there and loved it. Hopefully I can get back out for a whole season this year! I am currently slumming it in F***ing Tesco, which isnt fun.

I also have wicked sick skills with a pencil! I should probably upload some of my decent stuff to photobucket or deviant art but I am a bit busy atm.

since I got back I have started up a TEAM FORTRESS 2 Clan (http://dstm.xippy.co.uk/) with a few friends and that's going pretty well at the moment. I know its a terrible website but we have 3 match servers between us and some good guys. one of which is a professional website designer... that's why we have this temporary one. I made the banner all by my self!!!! I like to show off my Gimp editing talent :P Honest my Photoshop is better!

Feel free to drop by and say hi we dont bite.

Hey there mate :] I'm looking forward to see you ingame :] Btw I hate you for being pro with pencil, because I suck at drawing.
Ah - you like TF2? Enjoy my avatar, then ;)

It's always nice to see a new face in a dying game :)
Hey, welcome and enjoy your stay :)

Edit:
I see Necc you are one of these believers who think this game will last thousand years and more. You just can't bare the simple truth, that's all :)

Hi again Sketch :P

Hey, welcome and enjoy your stay :)

UT2004 is still not dying... i don't knowwitch noobs idea was this, but he not looked after his stupidness it is clear for me.

Wormz:
Digital painting is kinda fun:

http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs31/f/2008/209/e/e/Chibi_Predator_by_necc86.png

But when i tried to make something somewhat custom, then i spent 8 hours (during 3 days) from my life to create this hell simple sketch:

http://necc.uw.hu/rajz1-s2.png

then i said fuck off, and i went back playing UT2004...

Summa summary: learning how to draw sucks... more then playing... think twice if you start it.

Ps: if anyone idiot plan to quote me, erase images!

Drawing is one of those things one either can, or cant do man. I know I can't. +1 for effort, but I think "fuck it" was the right answer :)

meh, my best attempt so far was this:
http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd143/TrojanWormz/Lfinished.png
Drawn by hand then scanned in, lined and painted on photoshop with a tablet :p
Had a go at using different medias on one drawing for my art course and this was the result:

hey thanks guys... I've just been raging on 2k4 and gave up and went to own some nubs on quakelive lol.

If you want to improve your digital painting.....don't paint digitally. Ironically the best way to get better at digital painting is to practice drawing on paper. or painting on paper. as it builds the fundamental skills that are easily lost when you go into Photoshop and see all the shiny buttons and geek out so much you forget what it is you want to create.

oh and draw portraits... especially close ups of faces. and try and capture the likeness as much as possible.
Restricting your media is a good way to practice tonal depth and acuracy...2 secs upload pic i did this week

Ok finally got this to scan... would have been better off with a photo. can you guess who it is?
btw is a WIP so the shirt and jacket aren't finished. also the scan has brought it up quite light on the face. i used a dust and scratches filter in ps as well to get rid of that scratty scanned look.

I only used a hb pencil to do this. Nothing fancy. I was practising getting my toning correct.
The more pencils you use the greater your tonal spectrum will be meaning your lightest, lights and your darkest, darks have to contrast more. To learn to do this well start with just a 2 b or hb pencil to make this spectrum smaller so that you are dealing with less contrast. notice there is not a single patch of white except for the camera flash in the eyes. Lots of people make the mistake of making the eyeballs white when they are not. another mistake is making light patches of skin white.

Obviously depending on the lighting sometimes the skin can be almost perfect white. But you must still work out if that patch is actually pure white or if there is a lighter part somewhere else.

Anyway this was the first portrait I have done since school a year ago so go easy on me. My accuracy isn't perfect yet as I am a bit out of practice.

This is what I mean by "tallent" :)

You talk about tonal spectrum and how important it is, but that's only really the case for you because you have the other elements hard wired already.

When some one without this insight starts drawing, it's not tones that are the problem, its everything else before we even get to that part.
Look at Necc's drawing of the fox to see what I mean. It took him 8 hours and yet its just an outline..
The problem we have is visualizing scale and placement. Simple as.
We can imagine a nice picture, but making our hand follow that image is near impossible for most. The sense needed to do so just isn't there.

Your advice is sound, but only really means anything to someone who can draw in the first place. Delta can draw a bit.. Other than that I don't know of anyone else here who can :D
:o

yea I never really struggle with placing things. I understand what you mean because of the simple fact that I can never understand why other people cant draw. Or say "How do you do that?" and i'm like "well see this pencil.... and this paper....! when they touch you can make a mark. expand and apply this information for yourself."

all the things like tonal spectrum etc are just stuff I have made up in my head btw. things that don't necessarily make sense. i dont even know if the literal definition of the words make sense lol. Its just what I used to try explain it then.

thanks guys. gives me some confidence in my drawing again. I may try some more.
