Interesting, we have come a long way, nice find aximon :-D
Ive just sent a 4870 back and now have a GTX260, and u know what, there aint a great deal of difference from my point of view.
You know like if u have an AMD CPU and a Intel CPU, some times CPU's of close spec "feel" slightly different.. this is kinda like these to cards...
For me....
The ATI was louder, ran hotter, and blue screened and crashed and crashed. 30-40 pages on it, HERE (http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=260&threadid=98860&enterthread=y)... I paid 170ish for the 4870.
Now I have the 260, and it feels better, frame rates on UT2K4 are 98% of the time over 110fps @ about 130-165 ish, on all VCTF maps with netspeed @ 15000. This card runs cooler, quieter and actually feels less like its gona break when u hold it in ur hand. This went down to

From which vendor was ur ati ? Mine are from powercolor and they are rock-solid and never had a bluescreen or any other issue.

Well, ur lucky some cause it's only recently nvidia fixed their bloody drivers to play UT2004... They were buggered for the 8000 series and even still buggered when the 9000 series came out, and I think maybe also just when they released the 280 series it was still buggered................................
Mind you, regarding ATI, my 1900 that I used to have broke and I had to underclock it to make it work, then it went altogether so I swapped it for the 8800... Mmm... Maybe it's only coincidence we both had buggered cards :-) Mind you, I think NVidia is a better overclocker than ATI (or at least it was with the 7000 vs 1900 cards) so maybe they don't push the chip to its max so much on stock settings.....
